Use the consultation to compare material samples, laying patterns, borders, site preparation, and ongoing care. A paving project can improve the appearance and usability of an outdoor space, but its effect on resale value is not guaranteed. Product-specific performance and maintenance should be discussed as part of the proposed installation.
Plan Your Paver Installation
Choose pavers for the way the space will be used
Start by separating vehicle areas from walkways, patios, and spaces around a pool. Describe how you use each area and what you want to change. A driveway, garden path, and entertaining area create different product and installation questions. Bring reference photos, but confirm that the chosen paver is suitable for its intended use before ordering. Appearance alone does not establish the right assembly for your property.
Define removal, base work, and site preparation
Ask the proposal to describe existing-surface removal, disposal, excavation, base preparation, bedding, edge restraints, joint materials, and transitions to adjacent surfaces. Compare those inclusions rather than relying on a square-foot price alone. Tell us about known settlement, uneven areas, roots, previous repairs, or difficult equipment access. The proposed installation should reflect the conditions assessed on site. Any additional work exposed after removal should be documented and reviewed before proceeding.
Review drainage, elevations, and surrounding features
Identify pooling water and how the new paving will meet doors, gates, steps, garage entries, and nearby landscaping. Changes in surface height can affect those transitions and should be reviewed before work begins. If you are combining the paving with drainage, retaining walls, stairs, or other hardscape, ask for each component to be described clearly. Work near a sidewalk, curb, or street may involve a different approval process from paving inside the yard; confirm responsibility for checking requirements.
Settle the pattern, border, and maintenance choices
Choose the paver model, color blend, laying pattern, borders, and any sealer as a coordinated selection. Ask how samples will be reviewed and how cuts and transitions will look around existing features. Care requirements vary with the selected products and installation. Discuss cleaning, joint-material maintenance, and any product-specific instructions. Pavers are not a universal guarantee against settlement or ground movement, and a strength claim about an individual unit does not describe the performance of the complete paved surface.
Prepare for a measured paving proposal
Send photos, approximate dimensions, the intended use of each area, and your preferred style. Mention vehicle access, visible drainage problems, and other planned yard work. Final measurements help separate a driveway from a walkway, patio, or decorative border so you can compare the scope. Your written proposal should identify the selected products, preparation, included work, allowances, exclusions, and any agency responsibilities.
