You can check a California contractor license and see what the public record does and does not establish before hiring.
New Construction Builds
How long does it typically take to complete a new construction build?
A new-home construction schedule depends on the approved design, site conditions, utility work, material lead times, inspections, and the agreed scope. Separate design and permitting from the construction period when comparing schedules. Ask for a project-specific sequence and key milestones before setting a move-in date.

Can I bring my own floor plans, or do I have to use your designs?
Yes. Bring your existing architectural plans, available engineering, and any agency comments to the consultation. Cali Builders can review the proposed construction scope and coordinate with your architect or designer. If plans are still needed, confirm who will prepare them, what services are included, and the separate design and engineering costs.
What happens if I want to make changes to the design during construction?
Change orders are a normal part of the building process. If you decide to modify a material, layout, or fixture mid-build, we will document the change, provide an updated cost estimation, and require your approval before proceeding. This ensures there are never any surprises on your final invoice.
Do your new construction builds come with a warranty?
Ask for the written warranty terms that apply to your project before signing. Review the covered work, duration, exclusions, maintenance requirements, and how to report a concern. Construction workmanship warranties and manufacturer warranties may cover different items; the project documents should identify the applicable terms.
General Contracting
What does a General Contractor actually do, and why do I need one?

How do you choose and manage the subcontractors working on my project?
We only work with a vetted network of licensed, and highly skilled subcontractors who meet our strict quality standards. We handle all scheduling, coordination, and quality control on-site. You won’t have to worry about managing multiple tradespeople—we oversee them directly to ensure seamless execution.
How do you determine the estimated cost of my project?
We provide a comprehensive, transparent estimate based on your specific project blueprints, material selections, and labor requirements. We break down the costs line-by-line so you can see exactly where your budget is going. For ADU-specific budgeting, see the full ADU cost breakdown. For larger projects, we work closely with you during the pre-construction phase to align your design goals with your budget.
Do I need to be on-site every day during the construction process?
Not at all. We provide dedicated project management on-site to oversee the day-to-day operations. We keep you thoroughly updated with regular progress reports and photos, so you always know what’s happening without having to disrupt your daily routine. We’ll only request your presence for scheduled walk-throughs or critical decision milestones.
Major Renovations and Whole-Home Remodeling
Can I stay in my home during a whole-home remodel, or will I need to move out?
For major, structural, or whole-home remodeling, we strongly recommend making temporary living arrangements elsewhere. Because we will likely be disrupting major utilities (water, electricity, HVAC) and working in multiple rooms simultaneously, moving out ensures your safety and comfort while allowing our crew to work much more efficiently, ultimately speeding up your project timeline.

What happens if you discover unexpected issues behind the walls or under the floors?
When dealing with older homes or major renovations, surprises like outdated wiring, plumbing leaks, or structural rot can occasionally happen. If we find an unexpected issue, we stop work in that specific area immediately, take photos, and present you with a clear explanation and a solution with a transparent cost estimate. We always recommend setting aside a 10% to 15% contingency fund in your budget to comfortably cover these hidden structural realities.
Do I need to hire an independent architect or designer before contacting you?
You can contact Cali Builders before hiring an architect or designer. Bring your goals, property information, and any existing drawings so we can discuss the proposed construction scope. If architectural or engineering services are needed, confirm the responsible professionals, deliverables, fees, and coordination responsibilities in writing. We can also coordinate with professionals you have already engaged.
How do you handle building permits and structural engineering for a major renovation?
Permit and engineering needs depend on the proposed work and the property. Before construction, confirm who will prepare drawings, provide engineering, submit applications, pay agency fees, and arrange inspections. Cali Builders coordinates construction with the approved plans and the project team; the written proposal should state which permitting and consultant services are included.
ADU Construction
Can I legally build an ADU on my property, and how do regulations work?
California law generally allows ADUs on many single-family and multifamily residential properties, subject to property-specific rules and health-and-safety requirements. For the current approval framework, read the full 2026 ADU permit guide.
Learn more about our ADU Construction Service.
How do plumbing, electricity, and HVAC utilities work for an ADU?
It depends on your property’s layout and budget. In most cases, we can tie the ADU’s plumbing and electrical systems directly into your primary home’s existing utility lines. However, if you plan to use the ADU as a rental unit and want to track utilities separately, we can work with local utility providers to install independent meters. For heating and cooling, we highly recommend energy-efficient ductless mini-split systems for independent climate control.
Will adding an ADU increase my property value and affect my taxes?
An ADU can add usable space and possible rental income, but its effect on resale value or return on investment depends on your property, total project cost, local demand, and how you use it. New construction may affect assessed value and property taxes; the assessor determines the amount for a specific property. Review the Los Angeles County Assessor’s new-construction guidance and ask the Assessor or your tax adviser about your situation before relying on a tax estimate.
What is the maximum size an ADU can be, and will it match my main house?
There is no single maximum ADU size for every property. The allowable area depends on the ADU type, the applicable California approval pathway, local ordinance, and site conditions. California’s current ADU Handbook explains the state rules; confirm the size permitted for your address with the local planning or building department before designing. We can discuss exterior materials and proportions with your design team so the proposed ADU relates to your main house, subject to the approved plans and budget.
Home Additions
Will the new addition look like a natural part of my house, or will it look tacked on?
Our goal is always a seamless blend. We carefully match the architectural style, roof pitch, siding, windows, and trim of your existing home so that the new addition looks like it was part of the original blueprint. Inside, we pay close attention to matching ceiling heights, flooring, and molding to ensure a smooth transition from the old space to the new.
Learn more about our Home Addition Service.
How do you tie a new addition's foundation and roof into my existing home?
The connection depends on the existing foundation, framing, roof geometry, site conditions, and approved structural drawings. An architect or engineer should detail any foundation connection, roof framing, flashing, and weather protection needed for your project. Cali Builders can review those details with the project team and build to the approved plans; the method and cost should be specified before construction begins.
How do I know if I have enough space on my lot to build a home addition?
Start with the parcel dimensions, existing buildings, setbacks, easements, lot coverage, and the rules that apply to your address. A current survey or other property records may be needed to establish boundaries and locate existing improvements. The design professional and local planning or building department can confirm the buildable area; clarify who will obtain any survey and pay related fees in the written scope.
Can I stay in my home while a home addition is being built?
In most cases, yes! Because a bump-out or ground-level addition is built from the outside in, the heaviest construction happens outside your current living space. We keep the interior wall sealed off with heavy-duty plastic barriers to minimize dust and noise. You will only experience significant disruption during the “break-through” phase, when we cut through the exterior wall to connect the old space to the new, which we schedule to minimize inconvenience.
Garage Conversion ADU
Can any garage be converted into a livable ADU, or are there hidden dealbreakers?
Most structurally sound garages can be converted, but we must first evaluate the existing framing, foundation, and roof structure. The most common technical challenges include framing that isn’t up to modern code, moisture issues in the old concrete slab, or insufficient ceiling height. We handle a full structural assessment during our initial consultation to see if your garage requires reinforcement or if a partial rebuild is a more cost-effective path.

Garages are usually freezing in the winter and hot in the summer. How do you make them livable?
Standard garages lack insulation and vapor barriers. To transform it into a highly efficient living space, we seal the existing concrete floor with a commercial-grade moisture barrier before laying down subflooring and finish materials. We then frame out and insulate the interior walls and ceiling to modern energy standards, and install an independent, ductless mini-split HVAC system for highly responsive climate control.
What happens to the old garage door opening during a conversion?
The garage door is removed entirely. We then build a brand-new, fully insulated exterior wall in its place. Because this opening is already structurally framed, it is the perfect location to install a beautiful new feature, such as a large entry door, a modern bank of energy-efficient windows, or a sliding glass patio door to let in maximum natural light.
If I convert my garage, am I legally required to replace the lost parking spaces?
In many regions, modern ADU legislation has relaxed or entirely eliminated “replacement parking” requirements—especially if your property is located near public transit. However, local ordinances vary. During our permitting phase, we check your specific city codes to determine if we need to designate an alternative open-air parking space on your driveway or lot to keep your project fully compliant.
Kitchen Remodeling
Can you change the layout of my kitchen, or am I stuck with the current footprint?
We can absolutely transform your layout! If your current kitchen feels cramped or isolated, we can tear down non-load-bearing walls to create an open-concept flow, relocate major appliances, or design a custom center island. During the design phase, we prioritize the “kitchen work triangle”—the optimal distance between your sink, refrigerator, and stovetop—to ensure your new space is as functional as it is beautiful.

What is involved if I want to move my sink or gas stove to a different wall?
Moving a sink, dishwasher, or gas range requires relocating the underlying plumbing, drains, and gas lines. While this is a routine part of a major kitchen remodel, it does require opening up the subfloor or walls and updating infrastructure to meet modern building codes. We handle all necessary mechanical permits and coordinate with licensed plumbers and electricians to ensure everything is rerouted safely and efficiently.
How do I choose the right countertop and cabinetry materials for my budget and lifestyle?
It’s all about balancing durability, maintenance, and aesthetics. For countertops, engineered quartz is incredibly popular because it is non-porous, stain-resistant, and low-maintenance compared to natural marble. For cabinetry, we offer everything from highly durable, budget-friendly MDF options with sleek laminates to premium, solid-wood custom cabinets. Our design team will walk you through material samples to find the perfect match for your daily routine.
How long will my kitchen be out of commission, and how should I prepare?
Your kitchen downtime depends on demolition, layout changes, utility work, inspections, cabinetry, countertops, and appliance availability. Confirm long-lead selections and a project-specific schedule before demolition. Plan a temporary food-preparation area outside the work zone and discuss safe access, utility interruptions, and when the kitchen can be used again.
Roofing
How do I know if my roof just needs a quick repair or a total replacement?
A roof’s age alone does not decide whether repair or replacement is appropriate. An on-site evaluation should identify the leak source, roof covering and underlayment condition, flashing, decking, drainage, and any repeated failures. A localized defect may be repairable; widespread deterioration or damage may call for broader work. Ask for the observed findings, proposed scope, and warranty terms in writing before choosing. Learn more about our Roofing Service.
What are my options for roofing materials, and how long do they last?
Common residential options include architectural asphalt shingles, standing-seam metal, and clay or concrete tile. The suitable material depends on the roof pitch, structure, local requirements, appearance, budget, and the complete assembly beneath the visible covering. Service life varies with product, installation, exposure, and maintenance, so compare written manufacturer warranties and project specifications rather than relying on a blanket number of years. Tile weight and any needed structural review should be addressed in the plans.
Do you tear off my old roof before installing the new one, and how long does it take?
The proposed roofing scope should state whether existing roofing will be removed and how any concealed decking damage will be handled. Duration depends on roof size and complexity, access, repairs, inspections, material availability, and weather. Confirm the installation sequence and temporary weather protection before work begins.

Why is roof ventilation so important, and will you update it during a replacement?
A roof is a complex system, not just shingles. Proper attic ventilation is critical because it regulates temperatures and moisture levels. In the summer, it prevents heat from trapping in your attic and baking your shingles from the inside out (which destroys them prematurely). In the winter, it prevents moisture buildup that causes mold and structural wood rot. During every roof replacement, we evaluate your intake (soffit) and exhaust (ridge) vents to ensure your roof breathes perfectly.
Bathroom Remodeling
How do you protect my new bathroom from moisture, leaks, and mold?
Bathroom moisture protection requires a coordinated plan for the substrate, waterproofing system, drains, penetrations, and ventilation. Confirm the specified products, installation requirements, inspection or testing steps, and maintenance instructions for your project. Tile and grout alone should not be treated as the waterproofing system.

Can I change the layout of my bathroom, like moving the toilet or shower?
Yes, rearranging your layout is a great way to maximize space or accommodate a freestanding tub or double vanity. However, relocating fixtures requires rerouting the underlying drain lines, vent stacks, and water supply lines. While this is a standard procedure for our team, changing the footprint does add complexity and labor to the plumbing phase. We will evaluate your subfloor structure during our initial walk-through to give you a clear picture of what is achievable.
Why is my bathroom fan so important, and will it be upgraded during the remodel?
A bathroom fan is your primary defense against peeling paint, warped cabinetry, and persistent mildew. Standard builder-grade fans are often too weak or noisy to use consistently. During a remodel, we calculate the exact square footage of your space to install a high-capacity, ultra-quiet exhaust fan. We ensure it is vented directly to the exterior of your home (never into an attic or crawlspace) so it efficiently clears out heavy humidity and steam.
What are the best materials to use for a low-maintenance, durable bathroom?
For a low-maintenance bathroom, compare the manufacturer’s care instructions along with the appearance and cost of each material. Porcelain or ceramic tile can be practical for floors and wet areas, but grout joints and the waterproofing assembly still need appropriate installation and upkeep. Engineered quartz counters are often stain resistant, not stain proof; check the product guidance for heat, cleaners, and sealing requirements. Choose fixtures and finishes based on their published durability and maintenance instructions for your water conditions and use.
